Kaleidoscope To lose my bearings in the living swirl of Havana’s light and color was to come to my senses. In February 2017, thanks to Obama’s easing of the U.S. travel ban to Cuba, I flew direct to Havana, without being confined by the usual constraints of an organized tour. As I wandered freely through the vibrant streets of this mythical, color-washed, workaday world, camera at the ready, I was struck by the optimism and resilience of its people. Their individual hopes and collective perseverance, despite daily setbacks and uncertainties were a wonder to me. Through this series, I seek to capture the poetic lyricism of a historical culture in transition and a time-arrested city in flux. It’s a story of seduction—that of a photographer by his subject.
